On the east side of the city lies what might be considered a hot bed of Mexican and Latin cuisine – all within a two mile stretch. Four quality restaurants dot the landscape with some of the tastiest tacos in town, along with other delightful Mexican inspired dishes and cocktails. Starting with Dorado, each place gets better than the last, culminating in what many think are the best tacos in Rochester, John’s Tex-Mex. So take a look at our four stops on the taco trail and plan out your next excursion.
STOP 1: Dorado
690 Park Ave, Rochester, NY 14607
This small Latin fusion bistro is located in the center of the bustling Park Ave neighborhood. The tacos are simple, but full of flavor and are served with a nice side salad with lime. They have a wide variety of cocktails, but go with the Cadillac margarita that has Patrón Silver, Cointreau, and Grand Marnie. Other dishes of interest are the chorizo con queso, original enchilada and seared salmon.
Weekday Deal: Happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 – 6 pm with $3 beers and $4 margaritas.
STOP 2: Ox and Stone
282 Alexander St, Rochester, NY 14607
The Ox is an upscale Latin inspired kitchen that sits right on Alexander Street, in the heart of the East End. The tacos come beautifully dressed with fresh herbs and veggies, but the tortillas are the star here. These hand made wonders truly give you a taste of authentic Latin cuisine. If you are thirsty, the Ox and Stone is known for their cocktails – especially two favorites in the Little Pip and Local Celebrity. If tacos are not your style, you can’t go wrong with the paella, filled with mussels, chorizo, shrimp, and free range chicken. There is also outdoor seating if it is nice out.
Weekday Deals: Tuesday through Thursday from 4-6 pm they have $1 off craft cocktails. They have no corkage fee on wine every Thursday. They also have the In and Out Lunch Special for $9.75, where you choose three items.
STOP 3: La Casa
93 Alexander St, Rochester, NY 14620
Blink and you might miss this Mexican joint that poses as a house in the South Wedge neighborhood. For tacos, you get a choice of a flour or corn tortilla that are grilled perfectly into taco shape. The chicken has a chipolte marinade of sorts that is absolutely right on for flavor. Some of the other popular menu items are the empanadas, queso fundido, and quesadillas. They always bring out free chips and salsa which is a good bonus.
Weekday Deals: $5 margaritas on Monday, $2 tacos on Tuesday, Wheel Deal on Wednesday and half-priced añejo tequila on Thursdays.
STOP 4: John’s Tex-Mex
489 South Ave, Rochester, NY 14620
This South Wedge spot has long been a city favorite for taco lovers. The massive tacos come topped with cheese, lettuce, spicy salsa and big chunks of chicken. All served on a warm tortilla. They have a decent bottled beer selection and mouth watering burritos if you are looking for an even bigger meal. There isn’t much seating at John’s, so make sure to go when it’s not crowded.
Weekday Deals: Any beer for $2.25 on Tuesdays.
